Skin phototypes - conditional classification of the skin, depending on its sensitivity to sunlight (ultraviolet). The classification proposed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick is considered the most popular among cosmetologists.
In this classification, 6 skin phototypes are distinguished:
- 1st - Scandinavian, Celtic - thin white skin with bright freckles, light or red hair, bright eyes. Poor UV transfer. To prevent burns it needs photo-protection;
- 2nd - light-skinned European - light skin, hair and eyes. Freckles are smaller and less visible. Photoprotection is also needed;
- 3rd - Central European - skin is ivory, dark brown hair, light brown eyes. It tolerates ultraviolet light, tan turns out beautiful and even. It can burn only with prolonged exposure to the sun, therefore photo-protective means must be used;
- 4th - South European - skin is olive, brown, hair and dark eyes. Sunbathes quickly and easily, keeps a long tan. Protective agents are recommended to be used only for the prevention of photoaging;
- 5th - Asian, Indonesian - skin is very dark, hair is black. Does not need protective equipment;
- 6th - African - skin, hair and eyes are dark (black). Use of photoprotection is not required.
For different skin types, various protective agents are used, the main characteristic of which is the SPF (sun protection factor) digit. For skin types 1 and 2, protective equipment with a higher SPF number should be used.
